Margaritis Schinas is the new vice-president of the European Commission. Schinas will be responsible for the protection of the European way of life.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen explained during a press conference that Schinas will have a coordinating role with the Commission on migration issues. She said that he will be responsible for both migration policy, including specialised migration for Europe's empowerment and asylum policy for refugees, as well as border protection.
"Successful" migration management, the Commission's president said, is linked to the development of a "chain of actions", making it clear that while Europe should provide protection to refugees who need it, it should also implement "returns" of irregular migrants.
In order to assume office, all the commissioners proposed by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen must be approved by the relevant European parliamentary committee.
The hearings will be held shortly and the new commissioners will assume office on November 1.
