Nitsiakos SA has been transformed into a unique company in Greece and is one of the few in Europe that produce almost all types of meat, as in January 2022 it will put into operation a new unit for boning and packaging of beef and lamb in Ioannina.
Now Nitsiakos SA is becoming the largest, most complex and most vertically integrated Greek meat production company, as it will produce almost all types of meat beyond chicken: beef, lamb, turkey and rabbit. This is a new unit with a total area of 4,500 sq.m. An investment of 10 million euros for the company Nitsiakos, which has a 35% share of the chicken market, has already entered the turkey and rabbit market.
In the last two years, the company has gradually started breeding sheep and calves and now, after multiple tests, having prepared the infrastructure, will proceed in 2022 with ready-made, standardized products, which will give it further added value.
The new products will aim at both the retail and mass catering markets and will be distributed through the company's nationwide sales network. Currently, the company is in the process of looking for executives and technical staff with the experience to staff the new unit which is expected to operate at the beginning of the new year.
The 10-million-euro investment is part of a major investment plan announced by the company two years ago. This is the 4-year program, 2019 to 2022, where the company is implements investments of 35 million euros for the modernization of current units and the creation of new ones.
In 2019 and 2020, strategic investments amounting to 10 million euros were completed and, among other things, including the expansion of the Ioannina printing house and the installation of new mechanical deboning lines. Also, the two feed factories in Ioannina and Arta have been modernized to improve the quality of pellets produced, as well as the installation of a new biological treatment plant in Ioannina.
Nitsiakos is Greece’s leafing poultry company, 6th in the food sector, while based on sales it is among the largest industries in the country.
At the same time, it is active in both the primary and the secondary sectors, having a very important presence in animal feed, flour and cereals. One of the secrets of the company that gave it an advantage in the great financial crisis, where it tripled its turnover, is that it has "built" a fully integrated - vertical production cycle: It cultivates cereals, produces feed with the corresponding synergies (product recycling) which this process entails, hatches chicks, standardizes and distributes its products.
It is worth noting that only 42% of the group's turnover comes from the chicken business, while also 42% comes from animal feed and sales of raw materials for them. The rest is from rabbit, turkey and flour. Nitsiakos is now the largest player in the feed market in Greece, both for productive animals and pets.
