"It is our duty to cooperate for the restart of the talks (on Cyprus issue). I consider that this time the European Union will play a key role" underlined opposition PASOK-KINAL leader Nikos Androulakis after his meeting on Friday with the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides in Nicosia.
Androulakis added that "major efforts were held in those 50 years and you know it better than me but they did not bring the expected results but a big step was made in 2004 when the island became EU state member. It is very important for us that we had a PASOK government in our country at the time. I think we can use this step today more than ever, for negotiations beyond the United Nations. The Union should also participate. There cannot be guarantees and occupation troops in a member state. I know your anxieties and efforts for the desired solution based on the resolutions of the United Nations Organization".
On his part Christodoulides addressing Androulakis stated "I know your quality as an MEP from your years of service in the European Parliament, the cooperation you developed with your Cypriot colleagues and your interventions in Cyprus' issues".
In their meeting, Christodoulides and Androulakis discussed that latest developments in the Cyprus issue, European and international issues.
Androulakis will have a series of meetings with politicians and members of Cyprus' parliament in the afternoon.
