Marinakis: Security and prosperity are based on respect for international law

He also stressed, however, that "it is obvious that progress, security and prosperity are based on respect for international law and international agreements and as long as our neighbours do not realise this, their European perspective will remain closed."

Government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis on Thursday started the daily press briefing by referring to Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis' participation in the 75th NATO Summit and his comments on Cyprus and North Macedonia.

"Kyriakos Mitsotakis referred to the Cyprus issue, noting that Cyprus, a member-state of EU, cannot continue to be divided 50 years after the tragedy of 1974, reiterating the need for the resumption of the talks for a resolution of the Cyprus issue. He also referred to the issue of respecting the Prespa agreement, noting that full compliance with this is essential for the NATO alliance and the Western Balkans. We warned that its infringement or selective compliance not only undermines the credibility of all efforts for the settlement of pending issues in the Western Balkans but also puts the security of the wider region at risk. Pacta sunt servanda, agreements must be adhered to. We must all remember this, the premier said," the spokesperson added.

He also stressed, however, that "it is obvious that progress, security and prosperity are based on respect for international law and international agreements, and as long as our neighbours do not realise this, their European perspective will remain closed."

Marinakis then pointed to the prime minister's statement upon his arrival at the NATO summit, stressing that Greece will continue to support Ukraine as long as is necessary to ensure that Russia does not win this "war of unprovoked aggression".

He then referred to the announcement of the new 'Digispect' app by Digital Governance Minister Dimitris Papastergiou and Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Deputy Minister Christos Triantopoulos, which digitises the inspection of buildings damaged by natural disasters. He pointed out, that this will help civil engineers conduct such inspections faster and with greater safety and transparency, while eliminating unnecessary paperwork.

He also stated that "with a provision proposed in the bill of the Ministry of Justice, the way of selecting the heads of the supreme courts is changing, with the participation of the judiciary in these decisions. The provision of this possibility is a milestone for the further improvement and strengthening of the rule of law in our country."
