Which new doctors in public hospitals are going to receive 40K bonus

Throught this reform, the Health Ministry attracts new doctors to sectors that are critical for the National Health System. There is a serious shortage of doctors in General/Family Medicine and Internal Medicine.

A one-off bonus of 40,000 euros will be provided as incentive to new doctors to specialize in General/Family Medicine and Internal Medicine, two specialties with serious shortages in Greece compared to the European average rate.

Minister of Health Adonis Georgiadis, Alternate Minister Irini Agapidaki, and Deputy Minister of National Economy & Finance Athanassios Petralias signed a joint ministerial decision to this effect on Friday.

Every new doctor who will choose to train in the above specialties in 2025 at public hospitals with vacant positions and without waiting lists for them will receive 40,000 euros in two phases: 2/3 during the start of the training and the remaining 1/3 after completing it. In addition, these doctors will be obliged to serve in the fifth year of their specialization services of a personal doctor at Health Centers. This will allow them to "receive valuable practical experience, strengthening their clinical knowledge and skills in the first line of health care," a Health Ministry announcement said.

Throught this reform, the announcement added, "the Health Ministry attracts new doctors to sectors that are critical for the National Health System (NHS)."

Commenting on the measure, Georgiadis added that the lack of pathologists in particular "is the greatest problem in public systems, not just in Greece but in the entire European Union as well." He added that this new decision will "strengthen primary health care in all Greek regions, particularly in the NHS' regional health facilities."
