Increased road safety measures in place since December 20 for the festive season - Christmas, New Year and Epiphany - are to be ramped up on the days when a mass exodus of vehicles from and to the major cities is expected, with the aim of ensuring safe travel and the prevention of traffic accidents. The measures will remain in force until 8 January 2025.
The implemented measures include:
- Policing the road network by sector, based on the particular traffic conditions of each region.
- Increased police presence and targeted policing at the points of the road network where there are frequent traffic accidents.
- Increased traffic measures at the entrances and exits of large urban centres, where a lot of vehicle traffic is observed.
- Regulation of traffic with policemen, at key intersections, to avoid traffic congestion.
- Formation of general and special traffic control teams, focusing attention on the verification of dangerous violations (excessive speed, driving under the influence of alcohol, illegal overtaking, etc.), as well as violations that, based on statistical data, are responsible for causing serious traffic accidents (use of mobile phones while driving).
- Increased traffic measures in places where there is a mass gathering of passengers (airports, ports, stations, etc.)
- Special local traffic measures in areas where festive events are taking place
- Presence of traffic police at toll stations to assist the flow of traffic, and to inform and advise drivers and passengers.
- Informing the citizens through the communication services, in any case where it becomes necessary to inform the public widely about the existence of any traffic and other problems.
