Marinakis: The digital labour card safeguards workers' rights

Marinakis also commented on the increase in declared overtime in the ERGANI system after the implementation of the digital labour card, saying this had risen in the first seven months of 2024 compared with the previous year.

Two draft interior ministry bills that have been presented for public consultation provide "specific and immediate solutions" with respect to public-sector staffing issues, government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis said during the daily press briefing on Thursday.

Marinakis also commented on the increase in declared overtime in the ERGANI system after the implementation of the digital labour card, saying this had risen in the first seven months of 2024 compared with the previous year. "The digital labour card protects the rights of workers as the true working time is monitored and the exploitative policies of undeclared overtime and illegal changes and exceeding working hours are countered," he said.

Concerning the interior ministry legislation, he said that this included "specific and immediate solutions, both for a merit-based and rapid staffing of the public sector and for a new system of incentives and rewards of its human personnel and to improve the functioning of local administration, which is the first line of contact of the state with the citizens," Marinakis said.

Among these was the uniform bonus system for public-sector employees designed to give permanent staff incentives to meet specific targets and reward them for succeeding, he said. A key measure included in the second bill, he added, enabled municipalities to arrange settlements of outstanding debts owed to them with up to 60 installments, with a special provision specifically for vulnerable debtors. Other measures passed responsibility for running, maintaining and building border checkpoints to local authorities, he said.

He referred to the inspections carried out on Greece beaches over the summer in response to complaints filed by the citizens, saying that these were the most extensive checks in such a short period of time on Greek beaches, assisted by the mycoast application and drones.
Among others, Marinakis announced a reduction of road tolls by up to 3.00 euros for cars between October 1, 2024 and December 31, 2025, using the sum of 15.8 million euros gained by the public sector from the refinancing of the Malliakos-Kleidi road project.

He concluded by announcing that Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will go to Thessaloniki for the start of the 88th Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF) on Saturday and will deliver his opening speech at the Vellidio Conference Centre 19:30 on Saturday. The prime minister will then hold the customary TIF press conference on Sunday at noon.
